2 Aug 11: “In May 2011 we invited two Alyawarr spokespeople
– Richard Downs and Ngarla Kunoth-Monks – to participate in
the United Nations Indigenous Forum. The event provided a
special opportunity for Richard and Ngarla to speak out on
the rights violations taking place on their traditional
lands, at a world stage. They highlighted issues that are
common to Indigenous Peoples from around the world in
relation to the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous
Peoples. We’ve put together a video of Richard and Ngarla’s
experiences of this important event. …

2 Aug 11: “Adelaide culinary icon, Dorinda Hafner knows
what it’s like to encounter racism.  She’s also seen how
Aboriginal people in this country get the “raw end of the
stick”. Dorinda spoke with Andrea Fraser of Nunga Wangga
about her experiences which have motivated her to sign a
protest letter along with 23 other eminent South
Australians. The letter protests about the continuing

1 Aug 11: “The former Chief Judge of the Family Court has
spoken out on the NT Intervention. The former Chief Judge
of the Family Court, Alistair Nicholson, has spoken out on
the Northern Territory Emergency Response, known as the
Intervention. Mr Nicholson says he’s deeply troubled by the
current round of government consultations across the
Northern Territory that the government says will help it
decide in which direction the Intervention will be taken.
He’s told Michelle Lovegrove, from SBS Radio’s Living Black
program, the current round began so quickly, communities
have had very little time to prepare for them.”

Our Generation – Showing in London – page 8

Winter 2011: “The Intervention is yet another example of
the appalling treatment the Aboriginal People of Australia
have been subjected to in such a short period of time
compared to thousands of years of survival. Sinem Saban and
Rev. Dr Gondarra supported by the Yolngu people and
cinematographer, Damien Curtis, have created a sensitive
and realistic view of the plight of those who wish to live
a more traditional life in their homelands and of those
who appear to be dispossessed.” Christine Waterer

ASG Information Night: Our Generation – page 6

Summer 2010: “Local resident and journalist, Jeff McMullen
introduced “Our Generation”, the film by Sinem Saban and
Damien Curtis which we were there to see. The film explored
in depth the Federal Government Intervention into
Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory. Jeff had
told us that the film’s producers were not having any
success in having the film shown on government or commercial
media outlets and they were having to screen it in local
community halls to show the community at large just what
was involved in the Intervention. It is basically a war on
Aboriginal culture. The dispossession of the Aboriginal
people is simply continuing in a new guise.” Carol Gerrard

4 Aug 11: “A few weeks ago some local wag at Yuendumu
defaced (perhaps improved?) a couple of the big blue signs
(see below) that the NT Intervention had posted around
their town. Soon after some anonymous officer of the law or
government took equal offence at the defacement (?) and
removed the offending (twice offending?) signs. This
appears to have kicked off the latests round of a local
“sign war”, of which the sign above outside the Yuendumu
Mining Company Store is but the latest shot. … ”

Macklin says it’s all Howard’s fault
http://www.nit.com.au/News/story.aspx?id=22609
4 Aug 11: “The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny
Macklin has continued to accept the overwhelming opposition
to the Federal Government’s Northern Territory Intervention
by claiming current criticism was about how the
Intervention was introduced in the first place by the
former Howard Coalition Government three years ago. Ms
Macklin told the ABC Television program the 7.30 Report
people were “very hurt” by the way the Intervention had
been introduced originally but she refused to recognise
the anger and opposition was now directed at her
administration because there had been no improvement since.”

http://www.nit.com.au/News/story.aspx?id=22612
4 Aug 11: “The appointment of an Indigenous ambassador to
an overseas posting is a distraction from the issue of
Aboriginal Sovereignty at home, according to Maurie Japarta
Ryan. “Who’s Mr Rudd going to appoint? To where?” Mr Ryan,
the leader of the First Nations Peoples’ Party asked.
Activist, Sam Watson also dismissed the suggestion.
“I think it’s just window dressing,” he said.”

National Indigenous Times: Congress survey revealed

4 Aug 11: “The National Congress of Australia’s First
Peoples has been urged by its members to push for dedicated
seats to be set aside in the Federal Parliament for
Indigenous Australians. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed
by the new National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples
said they wanted to see Indigenous seats in the parliament,
alongside other changes to the constitution to be voted on
in 2013. New Zealand has set aside Maori seats in
parliament since 1867, with every part of the country
covered by both a general and an Indigenous electorate.”

4 Aug 11: “The federal government should support national
heritage listing for the Kimberley to balance out a planned
gas hub near Broome, the council representing traditional
owners says. The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) board met
with federal Environment Minister Tony Burke in Broome on
Wednesday night and urged him to back heritage listing for
the region. … some traditional owners, along with
conservationists and Broome residents, oppose the hub and
have staged protests near the site, arguing its
environmental and heritage values will be damaged.”

3 Aug 11: “Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke has
visited the site of the proposed gas hub north of Broome in
the Kimberley. About 30 protesters greeted Mr Burke as he
stepped out of his car and onto the red cliffs of James
Price Point. This was his first trip to the site which is
earmarked for Woodside’s $30 billion gas precinct. The
minister sat on the beach with a small group of traditional
owners and protesters to talk about the cultural value of
the area.”

1 Aug 11: “A blockade at the site of Woodside’s proposed
gas plant at James Price Point continues today after 2
months of protest action. If completed the proposed gas hub
60 kilometres north of Broome on the Dampier peninsula will
be the second biggest in the world. When Barnett’s
government succeeded in compulsorily acquiring the land to
fast track the $30 billion project late last year, the AMWU
immediately opposed it in support of fair consultation with
the traditional owners.” Teri Gibson
