Robin Chapple MLC has welcomed the news that officers from
the High Court are conducting an investigation into
allegations of improprieties regarding a Former State
Manager of the National Native Title Tribunal.
“I was shocked when last November I saw a 7.30 Report story
that alleged conflicts of interest by both the former NNTT
State Manager and her partner, a former Fortescue Metals
Group employee, in respect of their involvement with FMG’s
bid to mine in Yindjibarndi country. … ” Mr Chapple said.”

President, Graeme Neate and the Tribunal’s Registrar,
Stephanie Fryer-Smith have launched an external inquiry
into a former State Manager after reports published in the
National Indigenous Times revealed allegations of various
improprieties in reference to undeclared interests by its
employee to the Tribunal. High Court of Australia officers
have arrived in Western Australia as part of this inquiry
and have been interviewing people – with only the notice
of a few hours.”

says authorities must consider cultural complexities when
making decisions on child protection. McRose Elu has an
academic background in child protection and recently
submitted to the Queensland Inquiry on Child Protection in
Brisbane. Ms. Elu says authorities often ‘lump together’
Torres Strait and Aboriginal cultures and must also be
aware of differences between island groups. She says the
removal of Torres Strait children away from their tribal
group should be an absolute last resort.”
