marks the beginning of the landmark Stolen Generations test
case in the Supreme Court of Western Australia where it
will run for the next five weeks.
On Sorry Day in 2010 law firm Lavan Legal lodged a Writ on
behalf of nine members of the Collard family, including
parents Donald and Sylvia, whose children were removed
without consent and placed in state care between 1958 and
1961.
The Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA)
and law firm Lavan Legal have worked closely with family
members, acutely aware of the important significance of
this case, not only for the Collard family, but for the
thousands of Aboriginal people who were also stolen from
their families. … ”

5 Feb 13: “WESTERN AUSTRALIA: Members of the Stolen
Generations have begun a five-week trial in the West
Australian Supreme Court seeking compensation. The case
against the state has been brought by seven siblings and
their parents, Donald and Sylvia Collard. The children
were all removed from their parents and placed into state
care between 1958 and 1961. Aboriginal Legal Service of WA
chief executive Dennis Eggington said the effects of being
forcibly removed from their families had had heartbreaking
inter-generational effects on many people.”

important programs in the hands of Indigenous people. Olga
Havnen is CEO of the Danila Dilba Health Service … Ms.
Havnen told Brisbane radio station 98.9fm a lack of
confidence in Aboriginal people to organise and run their
own programs isn’t helpful. “There’s a lot of language
around at the moment around partnerships and yet I see very
few examples of genuine partnerships, where the
decision-making may well be joint decision-making. … “”

Government’s decision to discontinue funding for a number
of Aboriginal programs was held in Darwin recently. Chief
Minister Terry Mills has been criticised for not extending
the funding of a wide range of social and health programs
for Indigenous people. These include Stronger Aboriginal
Families, Together, the Balunu Foundation and the Larrakia
Nation Aboriginal Corporation’s Night Patrol program. The
chief executive of Larrakia, Ilana Eldridge, says the NT
Government must invest in Aboriginal people.”
